Sparky

One of my work colleagues went out of town for a few days and needed someone to take care of her dog. Perfect, I thought, the opportunity to "test drive" a dog, to see if the kids would like one. She assured me he wasn't a big dog, which sounded ideal.

Turns out Sparky is a Pomeranian, the least charming of all dogs. This is coming from a lifelong dog-lover, who can find something to admire in virtually every breed. Except Pomeranians. I admit that I was coming at this as an outsider, never having spent any time with a Pomeranian, but getting the sense that they are high-strung, nervous little creatures without much to offer mankind.

Sparky entirely confirmed my prejudices.

Friends of ours have a Chihuahua. Don't get one of those either!

We had a similar thing happen - our neighbour went out of town and asked us to take care of their rabbit. Having always wanted a rabbit as a child, I thought it would be a good opportunity to see if we should get one for the boys. My GOD was I wrong. They had poop and hay all over the place and it took Derek 30 minutes to 'catch' it one morning and get it back in its cage so he could leave for work.

I will never admit to my parents though that they were right not to get me one. Rabbits = best enjoyed at a petting zoo IMO.
